Ever since Donald Trump started calling COVID-19 “Kung Flu,” Asian Americans have suffered violent attacks across the country. 44% of those attacks have been in California. Beating Trump was a good thing. Beating back these hate crimes will take much more.
- With nearly 40% of hate incidents taking place at businesses, we need to urge business owners to report racist or xenophobic attacks to local authorities. Stop AAPI Hate is one good resource.
- President Biden’s memorandum tackling these hate incidents is a big step forward, and we should do more locally to expand public education about the attacks.
- As long as it can be done safely, we should provide bystander intervention training to stop attacks while notifying police.
- We need to ensure attackers are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law with hate crime enhancements.
When my parents left India to come to America in the early 1970s, they came with hope in their hearts and a belief in the promise of America. Growing up I sometimes felt the bitter sting of discrimination, but never the escalating violence against Asian Americans that we see today.
I am resolved to stop it.
